Heroines of Choice

Jordin Sparksimage

Jordin Sparks won American Idol.  With her money, she went over to Africa to give mosquito nets to children.  In Africa there are mosquitoes that give away really bad diseases when they bite you.  A mosquito net is like a canopy that hangs over your bed (or the floor because people in Africa are really poor) and stops mosquitoes from biting you when you are asleep.  The only bad part is that the mosquitos can bite you when you are awake.

Kate Gosselinimage

Kate Gosselin is very brave. She decided to create a TV show called Jon And Kate Plus 8. Jon and Kate had a set of girl twins named Cara and Maddy. After the twins she had six kids all at once, their names are Hannah, Joel, Collin, leah, Aidan, and Alexis. Kate Gosselin gave birth to all eight of those kids.  A lot of people are giving Kat a hard time about she and Jon’s divorce.  I feel very bad for Kate and wish people would think about the good things Kate did that helped her family, instead of maybe the one or two things that she could have done better.

Power of One

The juniors are presently working toward their Power of One Badge.  It is the first in a series of three badges in the Change your World program.  We have been learning about our own individual “powers” as girls scouts, getting to know ourselves better and what we can accomplish by helping others in our every day worlds.

We also began researching other women heroes (or heroines) from history, our community, and even amongst our own families.  This is meant to be a fun exercise they will complete by our next meeting by doing an interview with a woman from their family or researching about a woman in history – and her accomplishments.  (Did I hear someone say GOOGLE her?)

As we pool our information together in the coming weeks, the juniors will be learning more about other women that have accomplished great things, using their power to change our world.  These same women will be able to inspire our juniors to work toward doing the same – making a difference where they can – even today at the tender age of junior girl scouts.
